GREAT NEWS!!

Mike interviewed for a teaching position at Benzi Central High School in Benzonia, Michigan this past Friday, and he just got a call back today and found out that he GOT THE JOB!! OMG!! OMG! I'm incredibly proud of him, and so, so happy that he gets to do what he truly loves. I know he'll be an amazing teacher! :D

He was called in for an interview last Friday morning, and got a call back for a second interview almost immediately after they were finished interviewing the other candidates. Yesterday (Monday) we drove back up for him to meet with the Superintendent, who would pick a final candidate from the hopeful three that remained. This morning on our way to the grocery store the principal called him back with the job offer!

He'll be teaching 10th and 11th grade English, along with a college-prep writing class. Oh my goodness, was he excited, and for good reason. The job market for teachers in Michigan is practically nonexistent, but his patience and positive attitude paid off, and now he gets to go after his piece of the world. I'm so happy for him. I'm so proud. I didn't even know how to tell him how much. To be able to do what he's doing, exactly what he loves, is what The Dream is all about, and not everyone can honestly say they pulled it off.

I love you, Mike. I love you, I love you, I love you, and this is me, being the most proud of you of them all. :D

Yaaaay! Benzie Central is a good school too. There's not a lot to do in Benzonia but it's not even an hour's drive to Traverse City, and Manistee is a straight shot down US-31 to the south. So. Yaaaaay again!

I know people who got their teaching degrees a year or two ago who still haven't found jobs because they won't leave Michigan, and they're subbing or working in stores, so obviously Mike is awesome. Does he start as soon as possible or at semester? I'd imagine they already started school and stuff, right?

He's starting as soon as he can. Today he's supposed to call the principal to let him know how quickly he can get up there--right now they have a substitute in his position. Apparently the teacher who once filled it left abruptly right before school started this year, and they want someone in there ASAP.

I know what you mean though! He knows quite a few teachers who graduated this year (in his class, obviously), and none of them have gotten jobs in Michigan. Most moved away right away because the demand is much greater in other states. But he loves Michigan though, and his family is here (um... and I'm here too. That might have factored in I suppose ;) ).

They were particularly interested in improving their writing skills at the high school, and even though Mike doesn't have the classroom experience that most positions almost require, he has a ton of great things on his resume involving writing technique. In that regard, being so involved at WMU in the writing programs has truly paid off. All that aside though, Mike is pretty awesome. ;)

I didn't see much of the town, but I love that it's so close to Lake Michigan, it's easy to get to, and not far away from TC. For this year at least, he'll even be a teensy bit closer to me than he was in Lansing. BONUS!

*excited*

is benzonia close to kzoo?! compared to big rapids?

Boomer said...

Lol, no. That's a definitely not. Probably about a three and a half hour drive from Kzoo up 131, but next year I won't have as much studying to do on the weekends, so it won't be a big deal. I'd drive a lot farther than that for my man. :)
